A House as a Canvas – Münter Haus Murnau

Travel

There are places that feel like they have been collected rather than designed.

Design journal visit – Gabriele Münter House, cuvée.OBJ

The Münter Haus in Murnau is one of them. Gabriele Münter bought the house in 1909 and spent several years here with Wassily Kandinsky. Together, they shaped the house and its garden, painting furniture according to their own ideas. The rooms became part of their creative world. Not just a place to live, but a place to work, gather and be inspired.

What makes the house so fascinating is Münter’s way of looking at everyday things. A chair was not simply a chair. A piece of furniture could become a canvas, a room could become a composition, and a home could become an expression of the people living in it.

There is something beautiful about a home becoming a collection of things that carry personality. Objects that can be useful, beautiful, strange or simply loved and that start to tell a story when they live together. Maybe that is what makes the Münter Haus so inspiring. The feeling that art does not always have to hang on a wall. Sometimes it can be a chair, a garden, a room or simply the way things are allowed to live together.
